Tips :: Caring for Your Dog

December 2006

Here is something fun for the holidays.  Have a happy and safe holiday with your doggie friends!

Top 10 ways to tell if Martha Stewart is
Stalking your Dog:

10. There's potpourri hanging from his/her collar.
9. The dog's nails have been cut with pinking shears.
8. The dog's toys are all stored in McCoy crocks.
7. The pooper scooper has been decorated with raffia.
6. The telltale lemon slice in the new silver water bowl.
5. You find liver and whole wheat dog treats stamped out with copper cookie cutters and decorated with royal icing using a #2 rosette tip.
4. Dog hair has been collected and put into wire basket for nesting material for the birds.
3. A seasonally appropriate grapevine wreath adorns the front of your dog's crate.
2. Your dog goes outside naked and comes in wearing a thyme colored virgin wool hand knitted sweater with matching boots

And the #1 reason:
During the winter months the frozen doggie poo in the backyard is carved into ice sculptures!

November 2006

Happy Thanksgiving!  Now that the holiday season has started, watch your dog for stress behaviors.  Make sure they have a quiet refuge for time out from the fanfare.  Try not to overcompensate by feeding them "treats" from the table or letting bad behaviors slide.  Holiday food is not the best treat for you dog and can cause abdominal pain or vomitting.  Lastly, secure the garbage!  It only takes seconds for them to wolf down anything that smells good.  This could include string used to tie the turkey or bones, which are brittle and could lodge in their throat.  Keeping their routine as normal as possible will ensure that the entire family has the best possible holiday.

October 2006
We all know that Halloween can be a fun time of the year. However, please keep a few things in mind so it can be just as much fun for the four-legged members of your family as well!

Protect your pet by keeping them inside during trick or treat hours. A pet left outside may get spooked by the noise and costumes. They will be more likely to run off or feel the need to become overly protected. It’s a lot of fun to dress your pet up to go along with yourself and the kids but they may not enjoy wearing the costume you fell in love with. Try it on them a week or so before Halloween to see how they will react. If they do not like it, you can work with your dog to desensitize him/her to the costume.

Remember to keep all human treats out of reach from your dog. What is tasty to us may cause harm to your pet. Watch for wrappers being let around, these can get stuck in your dogs’ digestive tract and may cause them to become severely ill.

Lastly, keep some pet treats near by for any of you pet’s "friends" that may be with their owners during a visit. Having something special for them will help keep them out of candy.

Just a few simple tips can make your spooky holiday enjoyable for all member of your family. Have a spooktacular Halloween.

August 2006

Please take care to ensure the health of your doggie friend during these hot summer months.

Signs of heat stroke:  intense, rapid panting, salivating, staggering, and weakness.  Body temperature over 106 degrees (4 degrees above normal dog temperature of 102 degrees)  Please keep a thermometer handy in your dog's first aid kit.

Treatment:  Sponge or spray luke warm water (cold water will shock the dog's already distressed system) and get dog to veterinarian as soon as possible, even in mild cases.

To Avoid:  Do not leave unattended in direct sunlight or in cars on a day over 80 degrees without access to air conditioning or a fan (even with the windows down.)  The air temperature is still to hot for the dogs to use to cool themselves down.

Also, please don't take your pet with you to an event intended for people.  A flea market on a hot summer day is not the place for a dog to have to be and try to stay cool with all the people and vendors around.  Access to cool, clean water is a must during the summer months!

Stay cool this summer...  Blue Prints Dog Studio.

Summer 2005
Summer is loaded with possibilities for you and your pet to enjoy. Keep in mind the grooming requirements of your pet are still in effect, not just for long hair dogs but short hair ones too. While the shedding season continues, consider having your dog “carded”. This process cuts out the undercoat without changing the appearance of your dog’s hair length. It also shortens the shedding time which in turn, saves on your vacuum!  If your dog loves to swim, be sure to rinse them off as many bacteria and fungi love to grow on their skin!
